MOONSHOTS · Fundamental-constant derivation under falsification pressure

Fine-Structure Constant Program

Use the fine-structure constant as a stringent calibration problem for whether geometric and representational hypotheses can become a parameter prediction without hiding normalization freedom, scale dependence, or fitted structure.

STATUSLong-horizon research goal
IMPORTANT LIMITThis is a direction, not a completed result.

This page describes the goal, work that already exists, and the main unresolved problems. It does not claim scientific validation, deployed capability, external adoption, market value, or inevitability.

WHAT THIS GOAL MEANS TODAY

The current interpretation, footholds, and open problems.

Where the research is unresolved, the description remains provisional.
01

The current corpus contains an exact variational parameterization of electromagnetic coupling, sensitivity and identifiability results, several numerical conjectures, and strong negative results. It does not yet contain a zero-free-parameter, first-principles derivation of the low-energy fine-structure constant.

02

The research target has therefore moved from finding a compact expression near 137 to a harder question: whether the electromagnetic direction can cease to be independently free on a globally admissible trajectory in coupling space, with the low-energy coupling appearing as an infrared projection of that deeper structure.

A difficult calibration target, not a derived constant

Current claim ceiling

The strongest present result is a sharper statement of what a successful derivation would have to remove or determine, together with explicit branches that have already failed.

  1. 01

Retain the exact Coulomb-plus-surface parameterization and its identifiability and sensitivity results.

  2. 02

Preserve the normalization obstruction: isolated U(1) cover, topology, and charge data do not fix the positive gauge-metric normalization modulus.

  3. 03

Treat compact expressions and correction series near the measured value as numerical conjectures until generated by a declared action or operator model.

  4. 04

Do not promote truncation residuals, cover cardinalities, or numerical proximity into fundamental-constant derivations.

  5. 05

Require a declared scale, renormalization prescription, closure mechanism, and independently constrained parameter-selection rule for a first-principles claim.
